What I'm Working on Wednesday // PopShop™

I've been dropping hints about a new and exciting project and guess what, people! I'm letting you in on the news...

Couldn't be more excited to be working with the perfect team—the lovely Ashley Kane and Kelly Scinto. We've been hard at work reaching out to only the most fabulous vendors, scouting the perfect location, and patiently waiting for the right time to share the exciting news—without further ado let me introduce, PopShop!

PopShop is a European-style open-air pop up market. PopShop will feature 50-75 top curated vendors of antique and repurposed furniture, artwork, jewelry, and fashion by local artists, designers, and merchants. Each event will feature a local Connecticut brewer as well as delicious food from the hottest food trucks. Attendees will be able to grab a pop from our bar car and a tasty bite from top local farm-to-table eating establishments while they peruse the market.

We aim to provide a unique experience like no other pop up shop. The first PopShop will take place on June 1 in Fairfield, Connecticut—so mark your iCal. But be sure to check back, because we'll be announcing the top-secret PopShop location as we get closer to the date!

It goes without saying that you should follow PopShop on Facebook and Twitter as we name-drop PopShop vendors, food trucks, and tons more.

Sweet Invitations and Cupcake Flags

I put on my big girl pants, and have been patiently waiting to share these AED invitations and cupcake flags. I s'pose I could've taken the photos myself, but my clients are pro photographers so I figured they'd be worth the wait... and obvi, I was right on the money. Here are a few shots of the vintage-inspired engagement soirée for Mindi and Rich's son and daughter-in-law-to-be at The Brooklyn Artists Gym.

Guests of honor, Margaret & Jared, cutting one of the most beautiful cakes I've ever seen.

If you want to see even more photos of this incredible engagement party and all the jazzy details, mosey on over to Photography by Verdi's blog. And definitely like them on Facebook! I do.

Spotted.

Trump and I were featured on Sophie Mathewson's photography retrospect of 2011. Check out more of her beautiful imagery here.
(And yes, that's blog goddess, Joana Goddard, from A Cup of Jo.)

Check in tomorrow (tonight?) for a special Christmas Weekend Wrap-Up.

What I'm Working on Wednesday :: Photography Logo

It's possible that this is my new favorite project of all time.

So here's the story: Danielle Mora started the blog Mora to Love when her husband was shipped off with the military. It was a way for them to connect and for her to share photos she took of their little love muffin baby boy.

Fast forward to today, with lots more photography experience under her belt she decided to brand her  business with a shiny new logo. And it only seemed fitting that we name it Mora to Love not only because of the play on her last name but also because she's currently living in Italy and it reminds me of a little old Italian lady saying "more to love" in broken English.

AND because she'll be capturing beautiful imagery of love—at weddings, of families, and babies too.

Happy Wednesday!

Ho Ho Ha Ha Ha.

AED's Week of Cheer was last week but let's keep it going with one more Christmas card.

Conceived by my office-mate, Jeremy Brittain, and his super creative wife, Tanya.
Photographed by their photographer, neighbor.
Design template from one of the online card shops.
Top it off with professional-grade modeling by his awesome kids.

Have yourself a very awkward Christmas!

Thanksgiving Photo Leftovers.

I'm sure you're all ready to move on to bigger and better things (like Christmas) but let's just revisit Thanksgiving one last time. We had an awesome week-long visit in Rochester with family and friends! With the big highlight being Thanksgiving at my parents' house. 19 adults, 5 kids, 2 turkeys, and one hell of a good time.

I made this and all of our seating cards about 20 years ago. See, I loved type from a very early age. And check out that pilgrim woman profile!

Trumpster with his Godfather.

Nonna's soup kicks off our festive meal. It's a stracciatella and turkey soup with mini cheese-less manicotti. You're so jealous—and you should be. It's outstanding.

My sister and I with our cousin, Michele.

The bird. So delicious. Li'l G named him Trevor the Turkey.

Butternut squash, spinach, onions and cranberries.

Is it weird that Brussels sprouts round out my top three Thanksgiving dishes?

Going for a walk before dessert. Laura brings her "road soda".

McMuffin carrying the Trumpster who fell asleep on the walk.

G$ gets tickle-attacked by his cousin, Madeline.

Lastly, we took a picture of each side of our family—but this photo is my favorite. Check out Li'l G's face. Waaaah.

Okay, let's officially move into Christmas season! Can't wait to share this years holiday card and a few of the others I designed for clients.

Photography is a Good Thing.

'Tis the season to send out Christmas and Holiday cards! Or maybe just start compiling the mailing list? Okay, who are we kidding, not everyone's a crazy design obsessed fool like moi. (Our Christmas cards have been designed, printed, stuffed, addressed and ready to stamp. Like I said, crazy—I get it from my Mom.)

Well, now is the time to start thinking about it—and not just because if you wait any longer your friendly designer will be booked to custom design them for you, and not because the online holiday card factory will charge you up the WAHZOO with rush fees if you're running late. It's because you need to get a great photo!

So many gorgeous holiday card designs flop because of crap-tastic photography. And lots of gorgeous holiday cards are made even more incredible because of beautiful photos.

And while the best way to ensure getting a few lovely shots to choose from is hiring a professional photographer—that's not always in the budget. (Especially, when you're saving up for the Cars-2, World Grand Prix Mega Set!)

So, I've asked a few of my favorite photographers to lend some tips for capturing that perfect shot of  Billy, Sue and Snowflake.

LIGHTING
 • Use flash outdoors.
• Soft warm light, best found late afternoon. NOT direct sun if at all avoidable.
Where there's good natural light, turn flash off indoors to give pictures a softer feel.

STYLING
 • Encourage vibrant wardrobe choices. Coordination is important, but the days of black or white tops with jeans or khakis are long gone. I also like to welcome accessories (scarves, hats, etc.) Accessories like this can jazz up your photo and make it a little more festive. You can also create more photo ops this way!
A thought out setting like fence, pile of leaves, cool tree, old barn.
A "prop" or two, even if it is just some cute socks, cool boots, hot chocolate mugs and a blanket, quilt and a picnic basket.

COMPOSITION
 • Composition is key. Whether I am capturing a small or large group, positioning is important. Try and create mini groups and always encourage the subjects to stand close together. It depends on the lens, but sometimes certain ones can make people appear farther apart in a photograph “Act like you like each other!” is generally what I say to encourage people to squeeze together and it also serves as an opportunity for some natural smiles/laughs!

Avoid windows in the background when using flash indoors.

When you're shooting kids, get down to their level. Some of my favorite shots that I've taken of kids have involved me squatting, kneeling, and even lying down on the floor with my camera. Play around and go with the flow. It can be hard to make kids pose, and luckily, I think candid shots of kids and families are often the best ones.

• Go off-center. Don't always place your subjects in the center of the frame. Changing your composition can make photos more dynamic and interesting. (And I'd like to add—makes a perfect place for designers to drop in type for a card, announcement or invitation.)

Fill the frame. Your loved ones want to see your growing family up close! Filling the frame also guarantees less editing in the end, which insures a better quality photo.

ADVANCED
  • Aperture—If you know how to control the manual settings on your camera, bring the aperture/f-stop down to a low number, like 2.8. The lower it goes, the shallower your depth of field will be. That's what gives that nice sharp subject/blurry background effect.)

Resolution—set it at the highest resolution (megapixels) for cropping.

LASTLY
• Take LOTS of pictures...shoot, shoot, shoot!
• I'd like to add—Retouching is awesome. Don't throw out an almost perfect photo over a zit or booger. I can probably retouch it out or find someone who can.

While we had a photographer shoot our family for this year's Christmas card, that hasn't always been the case. McMuffin or myself has always shot the photos for our Christmas cards. And don't be all, "that doesn't count, Andrea, you went to art school". My favorite card includes a photo that McMuffin shot in the hospital of brand new Li'l G.

Great photo right? And McMuffin doesn't do anything remotely creative for a living. So, there.

Thank you so much to my expert photographer friends for contributing: Courtney Aliah, Erich Camping, Kate Neal and Sophie Mathewson. Click on their names to see examples of their gorgeous work.

What I'm Working on Wedensday: Save the Date

Lies—all lies. I am under strict instruction from the bride NOT to post these particular Save the Dates until they've been mailed. And I'm pretty good at following directions.

But I DID promise that I would find out who the photographer/s were for yesterday's Wonder Wedding post and I came through. Yay me!

They are the fabulous Courtney & AJ Aliah and the awesome news for you is—they travel ANYWHERE!

I know you'll be blown away by these gorgeous photographs by Courtney and AJ from all over the globe:

I LOVE suspenders!

This cake is so beautiful and delicious looking. And I LOVE how they incorporated flowers and capiz shells in the chandelier!

SHUT.

DOOR!

And no, these are not models—just a regular old bride and groom having the most amazing 'trash the dress' photo session in Jamaica Mon'!

Picture Pages.

Last week, I mentioned that we were having our family portrait taken over the weekend. Well, we already got the proofs back! So, I want to share a few of the fun photos that Misty Enright captured.

Now, the problem is choosing which one will grace the living room wall and Christmas cards and my desk...the list goes on. Here are a few of my favorites:

My Wild Boys. I love those little toes!

And I know how much my Mom likes a nice traditional family photo, so I thought we could squeeze some in just for her. Entrée meltdown.

This was as good as it got. Baby Trump throwing up his hands saying, "ENOUGH!" and poor Li'l G just wanting a cupcake.

We were so happy with Misty. They boys took to her immediately—especially G$ who turned into quite the little spotlight hog. I wonder who he gets that from?

If you want to get a jump start on those holiday cards give her a jingle on the jangle. Then call me to drop those gorgeous photos into a beautiful card layout!

Happy Weekend!
